Facelift Part 2

Posted in General by GWild on August 28, 2008 @ 18:26

I liked the addition of an image to my blog header so much I decided to to add an image rotator to it.

Now instead of the single Rodeo Creek image there are multiple images which can possibly be rendered as the header background with each page request.

I modified a theme I made for a friend, and I have been able to closely replicate my old theme.

I still have some css mods to do, but the results are good so far. I have a page layout I want, and I get the images in the header.

I’ll be working on more images as time allows. I have many pix, and I hope to add many more to the list.

A Minor Facelift

Posted in General by GWild on August 24, 2008 @ 16:59

I was going through some pix and came across one I took while Sage Hen hunting in Nevada in October 2007.

I was coming down Rodeo Creek and stopped to take a shot of the Montana range which is across King’s River Valley.

The picture turned out really well, and thought I would change my blog css a bit to accommodate the picture. I GIMPed it and placed it into my blog page header.

In light of the new layout, I modified the basic color scheme of the background to better match the header picture.

The page background is simply a snippet of part of the Montana range. I softened and flipped/rotated it to give it some symmetry. I reasoned that a background taken from the picture itself should match just fine.

I’ve never used earth tones before apart from greens, so I’ll see how I like this.

Sideache

One of my friends spammed me this link. These are very funny ‘You Suck at Photoshop’ videos by Donnie Hoyle.

I know I know – they are rather dark and bitter, but I couldn’t help but laugh until my sides ached.

Check it out – and close the door when you do or you might wake up the household laughing….

Note: I have only watched a few of these, and while they have not been ‘X’ rated, the content can be ‘mature’. Bear that in mind if you have young children.

Gentoo News

I was reading some posts by Daniel Robbins on his Funtoo blog which describe the current situation with respect to the Gentoo Foundation.

It appears that the Gentoo Foundation’s Charter has been revoked, and Foundation (well, it’s not a foundation any longer) member Daniel Robbins has some thoughts and suggestions for a remedy.

As I run Gentoo as my primary OS (at home), I was quite interested in this.

The Death of the Mac Notebook

Posted in General by GWild on September 19, 2007 @ 16:32

My wife’s MacBook finally died when the main board failed. I researched the issue and found that this was a known problem for the model. Unfortunately, their was no ‘assistance’ (warranty, deal on replacement pricing, etc.) with the issue. Wouldn’t you know it – not long ago I spent $95USD to upgrade the Mac software to OS X Tiger. Such is life.

I shopped around and, while I think the Mac notebooks are great systems, could not see spending the money to buy a new one. I likewise could not see the point in paying $350USD to replace the main board on a 600 MHz system.

I decided on an HP notebook as a replacement. It had the features I liked at a price I was willing to pay.

Note to Notebook/Vista users: If you find that your print server will not respond to print jobs once the system ‘wakes’ from sleep mode, turn snmp off in the port settings. Drove me nuts until I found the fix.
