Nevada Sage

In November 2006 I had the good fortune to be invited on a Desert Bighorn Sheep hunt by my long time friend Jim.  Such hunts are typically once in a lifetime endeavors for someone such as myself.

When we returned home after the successful hunt, Jim’s brother Don put pen to paper and chronicled Jim’s journey from ‘maybe next year’ to the Record Book.  The story was later submitted to Jim Dandy Productions for possible publication in the Northern Nevada Outdoors magazine. The story was accepted and published in the Summer 2008 edition.

I have published a reproduction of that NNO article as a page on this site.  Since I was a member of the hunting party, I am able to provide items the original hardcopy article cannot – the original color images, as well as additional images which did not make it into the print version.  Not wishing to shed further details and detract from Don’s telling of the story I will not write more.

I have changed domains.

GWild.org and GWild.net no longer contain content.

The new domain name is NevadaSage and can be reached by any of the 3 major top level domains of .com, .net, or .org. The .com and .net URI’s will redirect and NevadaSage.org will be the single domain containing content.

All of the old email addresses for the gwild domains will remain active, address book entries will not need to be modified.

This past Labor Day week my wife Aileen and I traveled to Nevada’s Great Basin National Park for a camping/hiking trip.

Great Basin is home to Wheeler Peak, which is the 2nd highest mountain in the state. I went to Great Basin for the first time 5 years ago and summited the 13,063′ peak with our friend Jim. Aileen wanted to visit Great Basin, and she said she was game to try to summit Wheeler. So, we met our friend Jim at the park and made a go of it.

We set up camp in the high campground and although we were not able to get our preferred camp site, it was a great spot. The elevation at the high campground is just under 10,000ft, so it provided us with an opportunity to better acclimate to the elevation (we live at 6,000ft).

The first day hiking, we visited the Bristlecone Forest and the Icefield (~11,000ft) where Aileen and I took turns lounging in the rock chair I sat in 5 years earlier on my first visit.

The next day we decided to make a Wheeler summit attempt. Aileen was an absolute trooper, and we made it to the top in 3 hours and 25 minutes.

I was concerned as to whether or not Aileen would be mentally prepared for the final ascent, which can be very intimidating when you see it from the saddle below (2D pictures simply can’t convey what you’re up against when confronted with the final part of the ascent). The view of Wheeler from Mather Overlook gives a sense of the length and steepness of the final ascent leading in from the right side of the peak (this view is from a significant distance from the mountain).

Aileen was fantastic and soldiered on through the thin air making it to the top in good time.

Interesting aside:
I took this shot in Utah on US-50 just east of the Utah/Nevada border east of the park. If this does not look like a tilted smaller version of the Stepped Pyramid of Djozer I don’t know what does. Note the snazzy orange trash can…

I created a new page on the site which lists and describes each of the images which may appear in the blog header.

The original post was quite long so I created a separate page for the images/descriptions.

I liked the addition of an image to my blog header so much I decided to to add an image rotator to it.

Now instead of the single Rodeo Creek image there are multiple images which can possibly be rendered as the header background with each page request.

I modified a theme I made for a friend, and I have been able to closely replicate my old theme.

I still have some css mods to do, but the results are good so far. I have a page layout I want, and I get the images in the header.

I’ll be working on more images as time allows. I have many pix, and I hope to add many more to the list.
